QR Codes and the iPad 2 – 002

qr code, qr code reader, electronic business cardQR Codes and tablet computers have a close relationship with each other, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, Motorola’s XOOM, all can interact with them with proprietary and third party QR Code readers, all bu one, the one that started it all nonetheless, Apple’s own iPad. That came to an end last week though when Steve Jobs surprised the world not only as he wasn’t supposed to show up due to his illness but also because he presented the iPad 2. Apple’s tablet computer became the cornerstone of the new concept in mobile computing in the 21st. Century, but at the same time lacked something its later competitors did had: at least one camera like it’s little brothers the iPhone and the iPod touch had.

This of course limited the way in which it could interact with QR Codes, provided that you didn’t had any way to scan them in the first place, so, that task was limited to, like said above, its little brothers, the iPhone and the iPod with its corresponding applications.

That was, like we mentioned above, until last week, when an ailing Steve Jobs came out and presented us with the next generation, the iPad 2 which now sported two cameras, one in the front to be used primarily with their own Facetime video chat application and a rear one for photography uses. And this second camera is precisely the one that now, more than ever, will make QR Code usage, more prevalent than before. Why? Because we’re not just seeing an increase in the use of QR Code technology in marketing, but also to make magazines and newspapers more interactive to the reader.

If the original iPad was a sensation among mobile users, imagine what will happen with the iPad 2, and the myriad of QR Code readers that are also compatible with the iPad and that will now be completely usable given the availability of the camera.  Imagine going to a restaurant with your iPad and by simply using the QR Code Reader of your choice, scan a code and have the menu in your screen for you to choose dinner or lunch, or even breakfast.

Or how about visiting a museum and by scanning a QR Code having a video explaining what you’re looking at pop in your screen to make your visit richer? Yes. This is why we need to keep our eyes open, because the one tablet that didn’t had a camera to interact with QR Codes, has gotten one, and now, things will move even faster.
